wow, the winter olympics were SO awesome! seriously! canada won 24 medals and beat their previous record of 17 (from the last olympics). sadly, the goal set out at these olympics was 25 (damn, one short!). oh well. also, we were in third place for the medals count (germany was first, USA was second). so that's totally awesome! our athletes won 7 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.
here are a few highlights:
cindy klassen won five medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze) at these olympics. she is now known as the female with the most medals and the canadian athlete with the most medals (in total and the most medals won at one olympics). she's a speed skater. and she easily bounced back from her horrific arm surgery she had in 2003 (her arm was sliced open by a skate of another skater (a crash)). so great job! also, she got to carry the canadian flag at the closing ceremonies.
clara hughes won gold on her last speed skating event at the olympics. it was an impressive way to retire. not only did she end with a gold medal, she can also say that she's the first/only athelete to participate in both the summer (biking) and winter (speed skating) olympics! also, she donated $10 000 of her own money to the charity "right to play", which is really cool of her.
for the first time ever, our men's curling team won gold! awww, everyone was so DAMN excited!
on the first day of the olympics, jennifer heil won gold in women's moguls.
the canadian women's hockey team won gold!
chandra crawford won gold in women's cross country (1.1km sprint) skiing. might i add, she's very amusing to watch in interviews!
and several other exciting events!
in the end, there were so many 4th and 5th place finishes. it was insane!
well, it was one crazy, yet amazing, olympics and i wouldn't trade it for anything. here's looking to vancouver 2010. hopefully i can attend those games, because i'm sure that's an experience of a life time.
